With Gloucestershire in a third national lockdown, people in the county are using their time at home in different ways — with the chance to embark on a new course not only a great way to stretch your mind and learn new skills, but a rewarding opportunity for improving your CV and having fun too.

1. Pottery on Prescription at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College

South Gloucestershire and Stroud College offer a range of fully-funded Art on Prescription courses which include subjects such as pottery, textiles and stained glass.

All abilities are welcomed to the courses, where a team of professionals are able to offer support as learners explore the world of creativity and its positive effects — especially anyone who is experiencing stress/anxiety/depression, behaviour-related health issues, bereavement or major life changes or chronic pain or illness.


2. Art Family Learning at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College

This course is fun for all the family and is delivered in an online virtual classroom enabling you to study from anywhere.

You will be taught drawing, illustration, animation as well as a variety of creative skills by a tutor who will offer regular family group feedback through webinars or written chats via Teams.


3. Mindfulness Meditation at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College

This course is designed to help relieve stress and anxiety and all you need for it is a passion for the subject.

This online course will see you guided through meditation where there is a focus on the sensations of breathing and mentally scanning your body which in turn will bring awareness to each area.


4. Certificate in Counselling Skills at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College

The first step on SGS’s counselling training programme, the L2 CPCAB course is designed to offer the underpinning knowledge and skills in order for you to use them ethically and safely in a variety of situations.

This will include submitting a complete portfolio of evidence as well as having to sit an external assessment all of which can help can improve personal and professional relationships.


5. Fitness Instructor qualification at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College

An interactive online learning environment will see students study six areas in the L2 qualification, including anatomy and physiology for exercise and maximising the customer experience among others.

And once you have completed the week-long course and are qualified, you will have the necessary skills and knowledge to become a fitness instructor in a gym environment.


6. Spanish at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College

7. Event Planning at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College

This course comprises of five units which will introduce you to the skills that are required to plan, organise and evaluate events.

Each module includes tutorials, practice assessments and interactive tasks so that your progress can be assessed.


8. Experiments in Memoir Writing at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College

If you have a passion for creative writing, then this might be the course for you.

This online course will see you draw on your own experience, exploring such concepts as history and memory, to write about the ‘SELF’ through a series of workshops. It’s suitable for both new writers and those who have been writing a while.


9. Caring for the Elderly at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College

With the UK population now having an average life expectancy of 72, this course is a useful introduction for those who wish to pursue a career in working in elderly care settings, and those wishing to expand on their existing knowledge.

Split into six units, which are all taught online, you choose when you study with a recommendation of a minimum of two to four hours per week.


10. Nutrition and Health at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College

This course results in a nationally recognised qualification and is split into six manageable units, which provides a comprehensive understanding of the key topics surrounding nutrition and health.

Studying is carried out via distance learning with a recommendation of a minimum of two to four hours per week, which should have the course completed within 12 weeks.


11. Writing for TV at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College

Every week you will receive a live remote session from your subject teacher, where you will be able to ask questions and interact with other students – all while you learn the key elements required to write a pilot TV screenplay: including narrative structure; characterisation; archetypes; writing effective dialogue; theme and formatting.


12. Practical Animal Care Skills at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College

Animal lovers will be able to take part in this free part-time course, which will provide them with a recognised qualification.

And once completed, students will have a range of skills including practical skills for pond, wetlands, woodland and grass areas.


13. Equality and Diversity Certificate at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College

This course is split into three manageable units and promotes social awareness and good practice of equality and diversity within a community, at work, at home and in a society in general.

Taught via distance learning, once completed students will have a nationally recognised qualification



14. Digital Art at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College

The aim of the course, which includes weekly tasks, is to introduce learners to digital imaging in order to give them an understanding of the key concepts of working with pixel-based editing software.

The learning will be broken down into a tailored 12-week package and will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and ideas with others through group chats and four webinars lead by a tutor.
