From luminous spheres on Robinswood Hill to a walk-in kinetic light installation at Blackfriars Priory, Bright Nights brings a programme of spectacular light installations to Gloucester this winter.

Lighting up the long winter nights, the new Bright Nights programme will see Gloucester come to life with light and colour from November 2021 until February 2022 – with spectacular light installations taking place all over the city.

From Friday 29 October 2021 after dark, three lampposts on Berkeley Street; the corner of Southgate Street and St Mary De Crypt; and outside Blackfriars Priory, will be transformed into illuminated stages where passers-by are encouraged to throw some shapes and play with shadows at the Shadowing installation.

Breathing Room sees a spectacular kinetic light installation come to Blackfriars Priory from Saturday 6 to Sunday 14 November 2021. Powered by a mechanical skeleton, visitors are invited to walk through an illuminated tunnel made up of 28,000 individual cones that appear to breathe.

Created by artist, Anna Berry, Breathing Room promises to be a completely unique sensory experience – with a limited number of bookable places available from for anyone preferring a more relaxed visit.

From Friday 26 to Sunday 28 November 2021, Globoscope transforms Robinswood Hill into an immersive, multi-sensory installation, with 200 luminous spheres lighting up the landscape at dusk

Visitors can go on an immersive illuminated journey through the historic Llanthony Secunda Priory at Lumino – where coloured text and lights bring the architecture of its ancient buildings to life in this specially commissioned installation.

Then on Sunday 21 November 2021, the Lantern Procession and Christmas Lights Illumination returns, with children from six primary schools across Gloucester presenting their lanterns on the theme of ‘loving our planet’ at Blackfiars Priory from 4.45pm.

Father Christmas himself leads the procession as it makes its way through the city, switching on the Christmas lights as it goes!

Gloucester residents are also encouraged to take part in the Advent Fenster by decorating their windows to look like an advent calendar in the run up to Christmas.

Bright Nights is taking place in partnership with Gloucester City Council; Gloucester BID; Unlimited; Strike-a-Light; Festival; Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust; Historic England; and Llanthony Secunda Priory.
