Revolution, the popular bar that has attracted Cheltenham drinkers, diners and dancers for years, has recently been refurbished. The SoGlos team headed to the converted church on Clarence Street to see just what has changed… and discovered just what a vodka waterfall is!
Gloucestershire revelers have been worshiping the gods of socialising under the steepled roof of Cheltenham Revolution for many years, and while the name may have changed slightly and the interior has undergone a serious refurbishment, the original beauty of the converted church – with its ornate leaded windows, gothic panelling and towering height remains impressive.
Fondly still referred to as ‘Revs’, since its refurbishment in May 2018, Revolution Cheltenham is also now home to plush booths, a stylish new colour scheme and impressive chandeliers, a DJ booth in a raised pulpit area, as well as giant ‘VODKA’ lettering, in case you forget what to order from the expansive and illuminated bar.
With Sharpies to hand, and rumbling after-work appetites, the SoGlos team were encouraged to annotate our internationally-themed paper menus, which we noticed (with relief) had been pared back since our last team visit. With the most enthusiastic scribbles immediately circling people-pleasing comfort food.
We picked a mix of dishes and generously offered to all share around the table, because we’re a nice bunch! Smaller ‘grazers’ included tangy and satisfyingly messy stateside wings, which were a unanimous hit; with the Cajun popcorn shrimp also proving rather popular.
The Smoke King – a burger so Instagrammable that gets its own hashtag (#SMOKEKING, seeing as you ask) was the clear winner on our table, complete with three juicy beef patties layered with nacho cheese, creamed corn, streaky bacon, caramel barbecue sauce, chorizo ketchup and crispy fried onions, ALL crammed into a soft sesame brioche bun. It was fulfilling Friday night carbs at its best. And was guarded protectively, and rather smugly, by the team member who ordered it.
Two of the team chose the blackened chicken, made with a surprisingly punchy Cajun butter, alongside smashed avocado, strong hunks of red onion, lettuce, tomato and mayo, served in a seeded wholemeal bun with fries or with a house salad. While the pub grub classic, fish and chips, proved a pretty good choice for traditionalists.
After a satisfying dinner served just how we like it – with speed, efficiency and a shot of flavoured vodka, of course – the SoGlos team was beckoned to try our hand at a cocktail making masterclass – a fun and interactive session that Revolution bars are famous for around the UK.
Lined-up along the bar, with choices spanning pornstar martinis, cherry woo woos, classic mojitos and many, many, more, we each got to choose our own cocktail, before getting ready to impersonate Tom Cruise – taking turns with shakers, meddlers and even a blowtorch – in one particularly humorous moment, where the recipe called for toasted cinnamon!
Proving hilarious fun for work colleagues, as well as birthday parties or groups of friends wanting to start a night out in a boozy and novel way, the masterclass was an all-round hit, made all the more memorable by the witty mixologist showing us the moves.
The pinnacle of SoGlos’s afterwork get together – for the purposes of Instagram stories, anyway – had to be the vodka waterfall. Don’t know what one of those is? Neither did we! Glasses of lemonade are lined up with shot glasses of colourful vodka perched on top, before a ‘volunteer’ throws (or evens spits, which doesn’t sound that appetizing when typed out) an ice cube, knocking the whole row of shots into the larger glasses for an impressive spectacle and also delicious drink! It was the perfect end to an evening of high jinx.
