The Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland 2022 has been released on Wednesday 16 February 2022, in a digital-only format – with some brand-new Michelin Stars awarded across the land.
In previous years the publishing of the the world-famous gastronomic guide has seen some of Gloucestershire’s best restaurants awarded a fresh constellation of coveted Michelin Stars, but local foodies might be disappointed to see that in 2022, once again, little has changed for the county.
The new Michelin Guide includes 194 Michelin Stars and 122 Bib Gourmands, with the ‘2022 vintage’ described as ‘even more momentous’ with the release of one brand-new Three Star restaurant, L’Enclume in Cartmel, Cumbria; five new Two Stars including two in Dublin, two in London and one in Wales; and 19 new One Stars joining the selection – with the closest new Michelin Star to Gloucestershire being Home in Cardiff.
Only one Gloucestershire restaurant has a Michelin Star in the 2022 edition of the guide – with Le Champignon Sauvage in Cheltenham maintaining its one Michelin Star.
Le Champignon Sauvage has remained one of Cheltenham and Gloucestershire’s finest restaurants since it was opened in 1987 by chef David Everitt-Matthias and his wife Helen.
Cotswolds destination Daylesford Organic has maintained it Green Michelin Star for a second year in 2022.
Introduced for the first time last year, there was a fresh batch of Michelin Green Stars to celebrate sustainability unveiled and while there were no new additions within the Gloucestershire borders, nearby Oak in Bath; and Wilsons in Bristol were both awarded new Green Stars.
Although Gloucestershire was formerly home to numerous affordable Bib Gourmands restaurants, there is now just one pub representing the county, The Bell Inn in Langford, near Burford, which is a modern Cotswolds country pub that serves a classic British menu, along with a fine selection of beers and wines.
Some of the nearest Bib Gourmand restaurants for Gloucestershire foodies to visit, also include The Inn at Welland in the nearby Malverns; The Bell Inn in Langford; Beckford Bottle Shop in Bath; with Root and Box-E both in Bristol.
While not within the county borders, famous Gloucester chef Tom Kerridge’s pub, The Hand and Flowers in Marlow, maintained its impressive two Michelin Star rating in 2022.
For Gloucestershire locals happy to drive to destination restaurants, the nearest restaurants with Two Michelin Stars includes Raymond Blanc’s legendary Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons in Oxfordshire.
The nearest restaurants to Gloucestershire with one Michelin Star, include The Whitebrook in the Wye Valley, near Monmouth; The Dining Room in Malmesbury; Salt in Stratford-upon-Avon; Bybrook in Castle Combe; The Royal Oak in Whatcote near Shipston on Stour; with Bulrush, Paco Tapas and Casamia in Bristol; and Adam’s, Opheem, Simpsons and Purnell’s in Birmingham.
