From its stunning filming locations to its talented crop of actors, Gloucestershire has some interesting connections to some of the hottest TV shows on Netflix.

SoGlos has rounded up five series that have a special link to the county – whether you’re in the market for a Regency romance or are hoping for a laugh.

Bridgerton

With its second season launching on 25 March 2022, Bridgerton, the steamy period drama that everyone is talking about, sees eight close-knit siblings navigate London’s high society – with Gloucestershire’s very own Badminton Estate helping to bring its world of Regency romance to life.

Used for its stunning interiors, Badminton House forms part of Clyvedon Castle, the fictional abode of the Duke of Hastings. And the Duke’s sharp-tongued mentor, Lady Danbury, also has a local connection, with actress Adjoa Andoh having grown up in Wickwar.

The Crown

Chronicling the highs and lows of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign from her coronation to modern times, Netflix’s ultra-popular historical drama, The Crown, has a number of connections to Gloucestershire.

Not only does it star Cheltenham-born actor Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles, but the latest season features scenes set at Highgrove, the Prince of Wales’s family residence in Tetbury, where many of his secret meets with Camilla Parker-Bowles take place.

Sex Education

Much of Netflix’s hugely popular Sex Education was filmed across the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley – with The Chalet near Symonds Yat starring as the home of sex therapist Jean, played by Gillian Anderson, and her son, Otis.

With three seasons to binge, it’s likely that Sex Education will continue to drive tourism to the Forest of Dean – with fans able to seek out picturesque filming locations like Dean Forest Railway and Bathhurst Pool in Lydney.

The End of the F****** World

Following two teenage runaways: one being a self-professed psychopath, the other being the rebellious classmate he plans to kill, this dark-comedy drama is gripping from start to finish.

With plenty of the show’s moody moments shot in the Forest of Dean, the grounds of popular Gloucestershire attraction, Dean Heritage Centre, also makes an appearance as the backdrop for some of Alyssa’s wedding scenes in season two.

We Are the Champions

Gloucestershire’s epic Cheese Rolling event takes centre stage in the first episode of this Netflix docuseries all about the world’s wackiest competitions, narrated by The Office star, Rainn Wilson.

After watching locals throw themselves down Cooper’s Hill on the small screen, discover five more fascinating – and equally bizarre – contests from across the globe, from frog jumping tournaments to chilli eating challenges.
