Beechwood Arcade is set to welcome a high-flying legend of the kiting world, with Peter Powell opening his first store at the Cheltenham shopping centre this Saturday 14 June 2014.
The Gloucester-born pioneer developed the first dual line, steerable kite in the 1970s, paving the way for the stunt kiting craze to take off across the globe.
Now in his 80s, Powell has launched the Mk III version of his iconic kite with his sons Mark and Paul, who hand make each one in Cheltenham before they’re shipped worldwide from an online shop, which launched earlier this year.
In the UK, a generation grew up flying Peter Powell kites and many will remember their appearances in nationwide news and the kite safety film that warned of the dangers of flying beside power lines.
‘We are pleased to be working with Peter Powell Kites and to bring this iconic product to shoppers in Cheltenham,’ said centre manager, Owen Acland.
‘We are sure visitors of all ages will enjoy rediscovering such a wonderful and eye-catching product.’
The new Cheltenham store will be the only place in the world where flying enthusiasts can browse the full range of Peter Powell Kites and see them put together right before their eyes.
While the grand opening day is set to feature heaps of family fun, plus the chance for visitors to get their own Peter Powell Kites signed by the man himself.
