9 exercises to enjoy in the great Gloucestershire outdoors

Forget sweaty gyms and stuffy studios this summer, take your fitness regime into the great outdoors and enjoy nine outdoor fitness ideas for the summer.

With the weather getting warmer and with more fitness trends than we can keep up with, SoGlos has rounded up nine outdoor exercises in Gloucestershire, so you can soak up the fleeting British sunshine while keeping fit this summer.

1. Make a splash

Swimming is a great way to tone up, blast away fat, and sculpt your major muscle groups. What’s more, for keen swimmers wanting to make their workout more unique, there’s the chance to go wild in the great Gloucestershire outdoors.

Offering an amazing exercising experience, challenge yourself during a wild swimming session with Swim for Life your way along the picturesque Wye Valley.

Meanwhile, if you fancy a more relaxed dip, head to one of Gloucestershire’s 12 outdoor swimming pools, offering plenty of choice whether you want to do laps in Sandford Parks Lido's 50-metre heated pool, or enjoy a luxurious dip at Cowley Manor.

2. Join a parkrun

Providing the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself, keep fit with like-minded people and inject a bit of routine into your weekly workouts, head to your nearest parkrun and tackle a 5k walk, jog or run every Saturday morning.

With weekly events taking place at Pittville Park in Cheltenham, Newent Community School in the Forest of Dean, Kingsway Sports Pavilion in Gloucester and Vineyards in Tewkesbury, lace up your trainers and sign up for a free and fun way to keep on top of your fitness plan.

3. Enrol in military fitness

British Military Fitness has been helping thousands of people across the UK to up their fitness game, with its hour-long outdoor classes of cardio and strength training.

Taking place at Pittville Park, participants can expect to tackle push ups, squats, star jumps, burpees, competitive games, running and more, with each class divided into three ability groups, promising a challenge for everyone, from complete beginners to seasoned members.

4. Take it outside

If sweating it out in a stuffy sports hall fills you with dread, take it outdoors, with outdoor gyms popping up all over the county.

Offering you the chance to work the whole body, outdoor fitness equipment is readily available for you to keep active, with gyms in Brockworth, Nailsworth, Churchdown and more.

5. Join a running group

8. On your bike

Possibly one of the easiest ways to fit exercise into a busy daily routine, cycling is a great way to get around while helping burn calories, improve health and get you enjoying some fresh air.

With a number of bike paths to enjoy around Gloucestershire, saddle up and enjoy this low impact exercise, with cycling set to improve general fitness, improve endurance and exercise major muscle groups.

What’s more, if you’re looking for a more hardcore workout, peddle over to FlyUp 417 Project and sweat it out at its adrenalin-fuelled mountain bike park, boasting three downhill tracks, a national level 4X track, dual slalom run, free-ride area, one-acre dirt jump arena, and two indoor riding barns.

9. Get in the water

For something a little bit different, consider taking your workout to the water, with water sports often requiring balance, core strength, agility and focus, providing an intense cardio workout without even noticing.

From achieving strong supermodel legs and glutes with wakeboarding and toning your arms with kayaking, to enjoying an adrenaline-packed cardio activity with windsurfing, water sports are much more than just a fun day out, with plenty on offer at Cotswold Water Park.
