Behind the wheel with Martin Chisholm

Owner of The Classic Motor Hub, Martin Chisholm, talks to SoGlos about his passion for classic cars and his beloved Porsche 911, in our latest ‘behind the wheel’ feature.

A motor enthusiast’s paradise, The Classic Motor Hub in Bibury is home to an emporium of classic cars and bikes, along with offering an array of events such as drive-in movie nights, supper clubs and coffee classics, providing plenty of reasons to visit.

Discussing his love of iconic motors, The Classic Motor Hub’s owner Martin Chisholm tells SoGlos about buying his first luxury model in his twenties, and what’s on his driving bucket list.

What car do you have?

I’ve got a 1974 Porsche 911 2.4s.

What is it about your car that made you choose it?

I owned this particular car in my twenties and thought I’d really made it but then of course, ran out of money and had to sell it.

So, I managed to buy it back some twenty years later, It’s a car that I thought I was very cool in during my twenties in London, and it then became my everyday car, this old, rusty 25-year-old Porsche.

When did you first become interested in cars?

In the 1980s I managed to get a job with Christie’s Motor Car Department. Christie’s are auctioneers of classic cars and that got me addicted, so I have to blame the auctioneers for my addiction.

There were so many of the cars that I wanted to buy, but the problem is it’s like being a child in a sweet shop – so many fabulous things that were all out of reach at that age.

What do you drive on a normal day?

In the summer I drive the Porsche and in the winter, I have a Toyota Land Cruiser.

Where’s your favourite place to drive around in Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds?

I’m very lucky because I live in Burford, and The Classic Motor Hub where I work is near Bibury, so the journey whichever way you take is fabulous. I’ve got 15 to 20 minutes of fantastic roads between my home and my work, I can take four or five different routes and each one is a lovely drive.

Where is your favourite place for a pit stop around Gloucestershire?

It would have to be the Classic Motor Hub, but The Maytime Inn is very nice and the Swan Inn in Swinbrook is a lovely place to stop. The Swan has got fabulous roads leading to it, and it has the river so you can sit outside.

Where would your dream road trip be?

I’m very fortunate, I’ve done a lot of fantastic road trips but one of the ones that really sticks in my memory as the greatest was the Route Napoleon which is through the Alps; it’s very, very hard to beat that in an old car.

What is your driving soundtrack?

That is a difficult one! My driving soundtrack would be Rumours by Fleetwood Mac.

What is your must-have essential for car journeys?

It would have to be two things; a mobile phone and a credit card.

How many cars do you have all together?

Well, I’m a bit like a farmer with his sheep. At certain times of the year, I’ll have a dozen and other times of the year I’ll have just three. Before I go to market I’ve got lots, when I come back I have very few. But I always keep my Porsche 911, that’s not for sale!

Finally, if you could have any car in the world, what would you have?

I would have the 1902 60-horsepower Mercedes which is in the National Motor Museum.
