Interview with Nikki Kirk Photography

Having been hailed as having a ‘timeless quality that transcends fashion’, Nikki Kirk Photography’s career in the wedding industry has gone from strength to strength – something recognised by being awarded The Silver Bar from the Guild of Photographers.

Speaking to SoGlos about her dream dos, career highlights, and commitment to her clients, Nikki Kirk Photography offers an insight into her expert services.

Congratulations on your fifth anniversary! What have been your wedding highlights over the years?

Thank you! Goodness where to start! There are so, so many wedding highlights and I have worked with so many lovely clients; getting to know them and taking timeless, authentic photographs for them, securing their wedding memories for generations to come.

My highlights would therefore have to be my clients. I draw inspiration from them, their personalities, their wedding stories, their love for each other and this is what inspires the images I take. I have photographed weddings in the UK and overseas, from the smallest possible (just the bride and groom) to weddings of over 500 people, in every weather condition you can think of.

They are all unique and I can honestly say I remember all of them even though I have photographed hundreds of weddings!

The feedback I receive from both clients and the industry has been overwhelming. The Silver Bar awarded by the Guild of Photographers took my breath away, as did the feedback after a training session from internationally renowned photographer Damien Lovegrove: ‘Nikki is the talent to watch, constantly evolving as an artist. Her lucky clients are investing in sublime photography with a timeless quality that transcends fashion.’

How has your business developed since you started?

The business has grown beyond my wildest dreams (and business plan!)

I have a team of five fabulous photographers who work for me, and in addition to photographing weddings I opened a studio in the countryside nearly two years ago, which has enabled me to have both a studio facility for portrait work and my sister company, commercial photographers Carlé & Moss, as well as having a lovely consulting and viewing space for my wedding clients.

When my wedding clients come to view their wedding story on the big screen they can snuggle up together with a glass of champagne to relive their wedding day, it’s such a lovely experience. I listen to my clients and they inspire and shape the direction of the business and the products we offer.

What can couples expect from your photography service on their special day?

Absolute commitment to them and to their wedding day dreams.

A wedding day is one of the most important days in your life and I believe that the key to creating exquisite and effortlessly authentic documentary wedding photography involves a lot of planning, a huge wealth of experience and creative thinking, and of course team work with my clients to create their wedding story.

What type of images do you capture?

I am a documentary photographer, so I capture what happens on the day. The emotion, the smiles, the tears, the funny moments, and sometimes there are sad moments if a loved one is no longer with us.

However, all of the images I create are thoughtful, timeless, and elegant; the way my clients want their wedding day to be remembered. My team and I work to the ethos quoted by David Alan Harvey: ‘Don’t shoot what it looks like. Shoot what it feels like.’

This takes some doing and it takes a lot of thought but the results speak for themselves.

What do you love most about your job?

My clients, their families and their friends. I am often told that it was like having a ‘new friend’ photograph their wedding day as they feel so at ease and that for me it the best compliment. I’m very much a people person and I want to know all the details and what’s important to my clients. It’s team work at its best.

Is there a dream wedding you’d like to photograph?

My niece Hollie is getting married over the next couple of years and that for me will be utterly magical. I think I will have to have a box of tissues attached to my camera harness!

For me it’s the personal touch. I’ve photographed at the grandest of hotels and private manor houses, I’ve photographed in a medieval walled city in searing Mediterranean heat, I’ve photographed at little country churches and huge gothic cathedrals, but for me it’s about my clients and their love story.

They could be anywhere but when the vows have been made, the champagne drunk and the celebrations begin, at the centre of it all is a couple very much in love with friends and family having a jolly good time (and quite often throwing some very interesting shapes on the dance floor!)

And finally, what can we expect from the next five years of Nikki Kirk Photography?

More gorgeous weddings, more clients joining the journey with #StudioNKP, more awards, and more stunning photographs to share with you. I can’t wait!
