Summer wedding inspiration with Nikki Kirk Photography

Remaining the most popular season for weddings, summer sings of bright colours, alfresco drinks and celebrations in the sunshine. Providing some gorgeous inspiration, Nikki Kirk Photography talks all-things summer weddings in this picture-perfect feature.

Nikki Kirk Photography has been speaking to SoGlos, sharing her seasonal insight and some beautiful images for some sizzling summer wedding inspiration:

Ooh it’s summer… and by that I mean proper summertime!

We’ve had a very, very long winter which although magical at times, was for the majority damp and cold. But summer is well and truly here and, in the UK, (and because of the climate) we have the most exquisite summers full of rich colours and warmth.

Summer in the UK is also still the most popular season in which to get married, although its three cousins of spring, autumn and winter are hot on its heels!

So, if you are planning a summer wedding for 2019, here’s some ideas for you…

Seasonal Summer Flowers

If like me you’re a huge fan of roses, then summer is the perfect season for roses in your wedding bouquet and for your wedding flower choices. There’s such a huge range of roses to choose from, we are spoilt for choice, especially with world-renowned growers such as David Austin on our doorstep!

Another of my summer favourites are peonies which are in season for early summer (their season tends to end early June), with cuttings of eucalyptus, lavender, traditional herbs such as rosemary or thyme, and even small olive branches.

Flower choices in striking blue hues, purples and pinks, in a deconstructed style (one I am told by my florist friends is actually the hardest to make even though it looks easy). All of these will make for stunning centre pieces.

Traditional garden herbs will hold up well in the summer months and also make gorgeous centrepieces. And to be extra on the ball, add in those that are also natural insect and bug repellents such as basil, mint, geraniums, and of course lavender and rosemary as mentioned above. A chat with your chosen florist will be worth every moment.

Flower Crowns

What isn’t to love about flower crowns…?

From the cutest little bridesmaid floral head pieces to something a little more dramatic for the bride herself; add whimsical florals and go as big and bold and boho as you dare!

Summer Fete Lawn Games

Nikki Kirk Photography

Now who doesn’t have fond memories of lawn games from their childhood?

French cricket, swing-ball, Twister and of course the more elegant croquet; lawn games have moved on to include giant sets of Jenga, chess, hoopla, Connect 4 and quoits.

You could even set up an adults-only game of beer pong for when the little ones have been waved off to the land of nod!

Or for more of a fairground feel, how about a coconut shy, hook a duck, and splat the rat.

Dodge the long engagement

Yep, just kick up your heels and go for it!

Contrary to popular belief you don’t need a year of planning as some of my recent couples will tell you. From organising a large wedding for over 100 guests over two locations, to organising a more intimate wedding with just 10 guests, they both planned and had their weddings within three months of saying ‘let’s do this’!

In my experience, the most popular month to get engaged is December, so getting married the summer that follows will enable you to really focus your plans.

Outdoor Wedding Ceremonies

And of course, best of all, getting married in the summer (weather permitting of course) you can have an outdoor wedding.

Making the most of the stunning natural backdrops nature provides for us during the summer months.

How about this dreamy lakeside set up or wisteria drenched walkway for your ceremony…?

Eating outdoors

The trend for farm-to-table food shows no sign of abating and so make the most of this with long trestle tables draped with linen cloths in the late afternoon sunshine, groaning with fresh seasonal produce in large sharing bowls.

Afternoon tea

Nikki Kirk Photography

Or if afternoon tea is more your style and of course it’s very British, treat your guests to mini sandwiches and of course scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam and let the debate commence… with my family coming originally from Devon, I, of course, must have cream first and then the jam!

But whichever way you choose, it of course has to be washed down with plenty of tea, served in bone china cups and saucers. Nothing epitomises British summer like afternoon tea.

Bespoke Couples Cocktails

Nikki Kirk Photography

Make your own bespoke cocktail to be served on your wedding day or pick your favourites to be served to guests along with canapés after the ceremony.

Add a Kilner dispenser for guests to top up their glasses with edible flowers and retro striped paper straws; or have a trailer bar on hand to keep your guests refreshed.

Barrows of beer!

If you’re more of a beer kind of couple then embrace the trend for serve yourself beer buckets, barrows and troughs. If you’re feeling generous add mini champagne bottles to the mix.

Hay there!

Nikki Kirk Photography

Hay bales… what’s not to love about these solid seats with their lovely fresh country smell (the good kind) and memories of summers long ago. For an extra-special touch, add blankets and snacks for your guests.

Childhood memories of the sea side and days out were always completed with a 99 from the ice-cream van. These days ice-cream is in a league of its own with artisan companies creating the most exquisite of flavours. Add an ice-cream truck to your big day to serve childhood favourites or a retro ice cream bicycle seller – stop me and buy one!

Guest treats

Us girls do like to wear the most inappropriate shoes to weddings – always have done, always will do! With the trend for rustic weddings where the celebrations take place on sunny lawns and fields, it’s a great idea to treat your guests to a basket of flip flops.

Sun glasses as favours are also a great idea. They are always welcomed and such a thoughtful idea.

Wedding signage

Nikki Kirk Photography

Let your guests know where the dancing is, where the food is, and just to say hello! Have some fun with wedding signage as your guests arrive especially if it’s a long walk.

Marquees, Tipis and Yurts

Nikki Kirk Photography

All of these have sides that open to let the outside in, making them a perfect option for a summer wedding. Just make sure you get one big enough should the weather take a turn…

Naked cakes

Nikki Kirk Photography

Still overwhelmingly popular and on-trend are naked cakes. Packed with fluffy buttercream and spilling over with summer berries, these cakes are perfect for a laid-back summer celebration.

Just keep it cool and out of the sunshine.

So, if you’re planning your summer wedding for 2019 let’s chat; I’d love to hear all about it!
