DIY Cinema competition launched in Cheltenham

Budding filmmakers are invited to enter DIY Cinema’s short film competition, with the chance of winning a golden pigeon award and cash prize.

Are you a budding George Lucas? Or a student with a flair for props and costumes? If so, then Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum and Cheltenham Film Society have come up with the perfect competition to get the creative juices flowing.

The DIY Cinema challenge, which is open to budding filmmakers, creatives and students aged between 14 and 30, is to make a film no longer than two minutes in length that pays homage to, or is a remake or spoof of a well-known piece of cinema.

The catch is that the film must be shot in Cheltenham, but the competition is open to filmmakers from across the country.

Organisers say that the film can be an animation, live action or any other form and can be shot using any kind of camera – from smartphone to Super 8.

The best entries will then be screened at a vintage cinema-themed awards evening, to be held at popular Cheltenham music venue The Frog and Fiddle in the summer, where the winners will be honoured with DIY Cinema’s very own golden pigeon awards.

The awards up for grabs include Best Film, Best Actor, Most Original Idea and Best Props and Costumes, with cash prizes of between £50 and £100.

Organisers ask that entrants submit their short films no later than 5pm on Friday 1 June 2012.
