For the first time in more than two decades, Badminton Horse Trials has been cancelled it was announced today.
Organisers made the difficult decision to stop the three-day event due to flooding at the venue, due to ‘exceptional rainfall’, with more rain forecast.
Described as ‘the most prestigious four-star competition in world eventing’, the Cotswolds event was due to take place from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 May 2012.
The Horse Trials is one of Gloucestershire’s most popular annual events – attracting crowds of up to 250,000 on the cross country day alone – the largest for any paid-entry sport event in the UK.
The Badminton Horse Trials was last cancelled in 1987, and this year’s trials would also have served as an important trial event in the lead-up to the London 2012 Olympics.
