Almost 30 years since its last facelift, Cheltenham’s Everyman Theatre will be closing its doors at the end of April 2011 for a five-month restoration – with £3 million being invested in the important Gloucestershire venue.

Throughout the summer the theatre will have its plasterwork and paintings restored, a new carpet, seats and curtains installed, and the auditorium and foyers updated and refurbished.

Gloucester-based building firm Speller Metcalfe will be undertaking the work, which will also include renovating the front of house, bars and toilets.

The Everyman Theatre is the earliest remaining example of the work of Frank Matcham, one of the greatest Victorian theatre architects, and is well-known for features including a glittering chandelier, cupids and painted angels, perfect acoustics and sightlines.

The venue has presented all kinds of plays and performances for over 100 years, today selling an amazing 200,000 tickets each year, and is much loved by audiences across Gloucestershire and the south west.

Theatre-lovers can also play their part in the restoration project by sponsoring a seat, which includes a brass plaque on the seat of your choice and recognition in the theatre brochure. See the Everyman Theatre website via the link below for full information.

Reopening this October in time to celebrate its 120th anniversary, the SoGlos.com team can’t wait to see the new and improved Everyman Theatre pull back the curtains for an exciting new period of performances in the county.
