Anna Ottilie Patterson was one of the most talented British blues singers of the 1950s and 60s – and The Barn Theatre in Cirencester is bringing her largely forgotten story to the stage, when Ottilie makes its stage debut in March 2026.
What to expect from Ottilie at Barn Theatre Cirencester?
This Built by Barn production stars Jolene O'Hara – an incredible singer and a regular in Van Morrison's band – as Ottilie, the forgotten godmother of British blues, charting her rise to fame from a terraced house in Northern Ireland to touring the USA with blues legends including the Chris Barber Band and accompanying the likes of Muddy Waters and Sonny Boy Williamson.
Ottilie discovered the blues during her childhood from the American GI's stationed nearby, sparking a lifelong obsession with blues music.
She taught herself songs from sheet music and spent her early career gigging around Belfast – going on to be named 'the greatest singer to emerge this side of the Atlantic', but her name has been largely forgotten today.
Beset by tragedy in her personal life, Ottilie and her incredible talent faded into obscurity. Now, The Barn Theatre invites audiences to find out what happened to Ottilie; why her story has been forgotten; and fall in love with her spectacular music in this funny and poignant show.
