This characterful cottage near Stroud proved quite the challenge for the designers at Timber Windows in Cheltenham, as sweeping arched casement windows needed replicating like-for-like.

When Jan and Ian Brown's dream house came on to the market in the village near Stroud they've called home for the last 20 years, it was a no brainer to make an offer on the spot.

The couple knew they didn't want to move far from the location they already loved and had long admired the 1950s house, not far from their home.

SoGlos speaks to Jan and Ian about what makes their new home special and how they transformed it from ordinary to outstanding, with the help of Timber Windows

Why did you want to move from your previous home in the same village?

We’d always admired this house, so when it came on to the market, we did everything we could to be at the front of the queue.

We believe that already being residents in the village helped our bid.

The house dates back to the 1950s. Did anything need doing immediately?

The windows were believed to be the originals and were completely rotten.

They used to open inwards and strong winds would blow them open. And when they were cleaned, the water had to be mopped up inside as they leaked so badly!

You employed the help of Timber Windows Cotswolds. What did the company suggest doing?

Timber Windows designed some bespoke arched timber flush casement windows.

The idea was to replace like-for-like, with ‘white’ flush casements, featuring arched top lights.

It was absolutely crucial that any new windows were timber, to retain the character of this house.

What did you think of the finish and service you received from Timber Windows?

With the intricacies of the designs, we knew that there wouldn’t be many companies able to provide a made-to-order solution that met our expectations.

The windows have been the final piece of the jigsaw in the full renovation of the house, since moving in.

We are absolutely delighted with our new windows – they are exactly what we needed and they no longer blow open nor let water in; and keep the house much warmer!

Any final thoughts for homeowners considering investing in bespoke timber windows?

Retaining the character of the home with like-for-like timber replacements was crucial to us and our new home.

Despite some challenges posed by the structural openings and external sliding shutters, we have to compliment the installation team – their work was very impressive and it was all left very clean afterwards, too.
