The A453 Evesham Road between Bishop's Cleeve and Cheltenham is reopening to two-way traffic on Saturday 1 November 2025.

After a months-long closure, the A453 Evesham Road between Cheltenham Racecourse and Bishop's Cleeve is reopening to traffic in both directions on Saturday 1 November 2025.

The road was fully closed from Monday 2 June until Monday 22 September 2025, when one southbound lane reopened, with the northbound closure remaining in place until Friday 31 October 2025.

While construction works are continuing along the route into early 2026 – including road resurfacing, installing permanent traffic signals and removing the temporary mini-roundabout at the Hyde Lane and Southam Lane Junction – remaining closures will be overnight on Monday 27 to Thursday 30 October 2025 from 8pm to 6am; and across the weekend from 8pm on Friday 7 to 6am on Monday 10 November 2025.

There is also a contingency overnight closure planned for Monday 10 to Thursday 13 November 2025 in case of delays due to bad weather or unforeseen circumstances.

The works are part of the Gloucestershire Cycle Spine which stretches from Bishop's Cleeve, through Cheltenham and Gloucester and into Stroud, which Gloucestershire County Council says will bring 'substantial enhancements for cyclists and pedestrians along the A435 Evesham Road'.

Councillor Roger Whyborn, cabinet member for sustainable transport and strategic highways, said: 'I am pleased to announce the next major milestone in the delivery of the A435 Cheltenham to Bishop’s Cleeve cycleway scheme, which is set to bring safer, greener and more accessible travel options to the region.

'We appreciate the public’s patience and support as we work to deliver a safer and more sustainable transport network for Gloucestershire.'
