Painswick, famous for its honey-hued Cotswold stone buildings, is one of Gloucestershire's most picturesque historic villages.

Recognised as one of the most instagrammable places in the Cotswolds, the pretty village of Painswick has scooped Gloucestershire village of the year at a county awards ceremony this July 2025.

Organised by the Gloucestershire Rural Community Council (GRCC), a registered charity that has been supporting rural communities in Gloucestershire since 1923, judges placed Painswick as overall winner for 2025 due to its 'consistently high standards across all areas of community life'.

Competing across four categories, Painswick also came first in both the ‘inclusive commitments’ and ‘climate and environment’ categories and was named runner-up in ‘community-led health and wellbeing’.

Coming a close second for village of the year was runner up Frampton Mansell, also located in the Stroud district.

GRCC celebrates communities striving to create vibrant and sustainable places to live.

Chief executive, Barbara Piranty, said: 'In these difficult times, it’s so encouraging to see the positive energy and activity in the communities we serve, showing that Gloucestershire is still both resilient and vibrant.'
