A significant refurbishment project is now underway at Oxstalls Sports Park in Gloucester, with leisure-trust Freedom Leisure leading the improvements on behalf of Gloucester City Council.

The work forms part of the council’s wider £8 million scheme to revamp and modernise both GL1 and Oxstalls, enhancing leisure provision across the city.

Work began at Oxstalls in February and is set to continue through to April 2026.

At the heart of the project is the creation of a new social hub, designed to provide a brighter, more comfortable and environmentally friendly space for visitors. The new area will offer food and drink options.

In addition to the new hub, improvements will be made across the wider sports park. Indoor courts and outdoor pitches will benefit from upgraded lighting to improve visibility and playing conditions, while the grass pitch changing facilities are being refurbished to enhance comfort and quality for teams and officials.

Nick Charlton, area manager at Freedom Leisure, said: ‘This investment demonstrates our continued commitment to improving facilities for local clubs, players and visitors. The new hub will provide a modern, welcoming environment that complements the high-quality sports provision already on site, helping us support even more people to be active and connected within their community.’

Councillor Caroline Courtney, cabinet member for culture and leisure, added: ‘We’re pleased to see the council’s investment moving forward, which is aimed at providing better quality facilities to support and improve the health and wellbeing of our residents.’
