A 'powerful' light and sound installation is coming to Gloucester Cathedral this autumn, commemorating the first and second world wars and sharing a message of peace.
Created by world-renowned immersive sound and light installation specialists, Luxmuralis, 'Poppy Fields' takes over Gloucester Cathedral from Friday 17 to Saturday 25 October 2025.
Inviting visitors to 'pause, reflect and remember', the installation commemorates the sacrifices made during World War I and II, exploring the true cost of human conflict, while offering a message of peace and hope.
The installation features evocative artworks projected across the cathedral's spectacular spaces accompanied by poetry narrated by Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne.
'Poppy Fields' follows Luxmuralis's last installation at the cathedral, 'Light Eternal' in 2023, which celebrated the building's storied 1,000-year history and was a sell-out success.
Lead artist and artistic director at Luxmuralis, Peter Walker, said: 'We are delighted to be back in Gloucester, this time 'Poppy Fields' leads visitors on a powerful and poignant journey through light and sound, transforming the ancient walls of the cathedral into a living artwork of remembrance.
'As they walk through this sacred space, immersed in cascading projections and powerful words, we hope people will reflect not only on the immense sacrifices of the past, but also carry forward a message of peace and hope for the future.'
Dean of Gloucester, the Very Reverend Andrew Zihni, added: 'In the lead-up to the season of reflection and remembrance, 'Poppy Fields' offers a powerful opportunity for people of all ages to come together and honour those who have gone before us.
'In a world where the themes of war and peace remain so prevalent, it is deeply fitting that this installation will be hosted in the cathedral. 'Poppy Fields' is a moving, peaceful experience and one we are proud to bring to Gloucester Cathedral.'
Tickets for Poppy Fields are on sale now, costing £9.50 for adults and £4.50 for children aged five to 16, with under fives able to visit for free.
There are a limited number of Premium Experience tickets available, offering fast-track entry, a complimentary drink and exclusive access to both the Tribune Gallery and Bridge Chapel above the Quire, providing unique views of the installation from above.
Gloucester Cathedral is also extending a 20 per cent discount on all ticket types to those serving in the UK military and veterans.
