Want to try the world-renowned phenomenon of Cheese Rolling but find the thought of tumbling down a 180-metre hill too intimidating? Now's the time, as gaming platform Steam releases a virtual Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling game — and it's completely free to play.

With 'overwhelmingly positive reviews' the new game – created by developer The Interviewed and aptly named 'Cheese Rolling' — is a ragdoll recreation of the infamous downhill Gloucestershire cheese chase.

And while it's heavily inspired by the county's wacky tradition at Cooper's Hill in Brockworth, it does deviate from reality slightly, with one race taking place on an active volcano. Who knew Cheese Rolling could become even more dangerous?

The physics-driven indie game offers online and solo modes, proximity voice chat and short, competitive runs.

With gravity doing most of the work, players can chase a cheese wheel down a steep hill and tumble with friends, without the risk of broken bones.

But for brave souls who still want to try the real thing, the famous Cheese Rolling event happens every year on the spring bank holiday, with the next event likely to take place on Monday 25 May 2026. Races usually start from 12pm.

Cheese Rolling has no official organising body, so racers must remember that they take part entirely at their own risk.

For more information about the game, or to play Cheese Rolling, visit the Steam store online.
