Across Lilian Faithfull Care homes, physiotherapists are working daily alongside carers to help residents maintain mobility, rebuild confidence after setbacks and reduce the risk of falls.
The team's approach is woven into everyday life, making physiotherapy part of residents' routines rather than a series of occasional appointments.
With a focus on independence and supporting residents in daily activities, from walking and dressing to taking part in social and physical exercises, physiotherapy strengthens muscles, improves balance and restores confidence, helping people remain active and self-reliant for longer.
Despite how common falls are among older people, Lilian Faithfull Care (LFC) insists they don't have to be an inevitable part of ageing.
By addressing multiple factors, such as muscle weakness, medications, hydration, footwear and vision, the physio team at LFC can reduce risk and provide continuous support.
Anna Pothen, one of the LFC physios, said: 'Sometimes the smallest changes – like improving strength in the lower limbs or adjusting walking routes – can make a huge difference.'
Even when falls do occur, the physio team work slowly and carefully afterwards.
Martin DeGroodt, another physio team member, said: 'We build trust through small goals, helping residents realise they can move safely again. Once that confidence returns, everything starts to change.'
Embedded into daily life and supported by carers and activity teams, residents benefit from one-to-one physio sessions, group classes and even access to a dedicated gym at Faithfull House in Cheltenham, where progress is visible and motivation is high.

And as well as traditional physical care, the LFC physio team introduces practical technology, such as mobile lifting chairs to enhance safety and dignity, while also contributing to research projects – such as a collaboration with university researchers in Bristol on robotics and mobility projects – that shape how physiotherapy supports older people in real-world settings.
Families quickly notice the difference, too, seeing loved ones regain strength, walk further and engage more confidently in daily life.
Anna added: 'We meet families regularly. They see the progress first hand. One family told us their father could only take a few steps when he moved in, now he walks the corridor. It is emotional for them and for us.'
With physiotherapy integrated into everyday care, Lilian Faithfull Care residents are supported to stay independent, active and safe for longer.
Martin concluded: 'Most homes rely on visiting therapists. Having a team on-site removes waiting lists and helps us deliver continuous, personalised care.'
