The Room on the Broom trail is the latest from Forestry England to feature characters from Julia Donaldson and Axel Schafer books, like The Gruffalo, The Highway Rat and Stick Man.

Forestry England is helping families connect with nature by bringing another beloved Julia Donaldson story to life, with the launch of its new Room on the Broom activity trail.

Launching at both Beechenhurst in the Forest of Dean and Westonbirt, The National Arboretum in the Cotswolds this week, the activity trail is the latest from Forestry England to bring Julia Donaldson and Axel Schafer's treasured characters to its woodland settings.

Families can join Witch and her friends for a 'spellbinding' journey through the woods at both locations throughout 2026, with this year marking the 25th anniversary of the beloved book which also has a 2012 TV adaptation, featuring the vocal talents of Gillian Anderson and Simon Pegg.

On the trail, children can help Witch find her lost hat, bow and wand and collect magical ingredients to complete her spell, with each stop packed with 'fun activities, fascinating forest facts, and a sprinkle of woodland magic'.

Described as 'perfect for young explorers and families looking for an unforgettable day out', visitors can also pick up a trail pack costing £4, from either the entrance to Westonbirt or Beechenhurst Cafe, containing a themed lanyard, magic spell cards, stickers, a pencil and a pop-out craft to create your very own witchy wand.

Open at both sites from Tuesday 27 January 2026, Forestry England says the trail is 'a wonderful way for families to connect with nature, enjoy a beloved story, and create unforgettable memories together.'
