Roots in Gloucester is closing at the end of February 2026 due to rising costs and dwindling income.

Gloucester's beloved Roots community hub, cafe and refill shop is closing this February 2026 as it can no longer afford to stay open.

The inclusive cafe and community space has been a fixture in Kingsholm for years, but is not without its struggles, having closed and reopened back in 2024.

The announcement is the second hit to Gloucestershire's hospitality industry in as many days, as Cheltenham cafe, restaurant and community space, Sorrel Stores, has just announced its own closure.

There has been an outpouring of sadness and support for Roots on social media, with members of the community sharing their fond memories – with some calling on the council to intervene.

A statement on the Roots Instagram said the imminent closure is due to 'a significant drop in income, coupled with a major increase in bills putting us in debt'.

The statement continues: 'The building is also looking likely to be put up for sale by our landlords, Branch 2, and Roots simply not having the funds to purchase it.

'These issues could be worked around, we could move, we can sort out our income streams and get some help, but the major problem that stops us is that our remaining directors need to move on from Roots due to life events.

'We are open to offers to take over, or purchase out the assets of the business to save Roots.'

Roots is calling for anyone in a position to potentially take over the business to get in touch before Wednesday 11 February 2026, when it will start looking to sell off assets.

The current operators estimate that a substantial buyout would be required, with at least £8,000 needed to clear its existing debts.
