To help those struggling with tendon pain, Nuffield Health Cheltenham Hospital launches its innovative shockwave therapy this spring.
This evidence-based treatment uses impulses known as shockwaves. The shockwaves enter into the tissue of the affected area to increase blood flow and stimulate healing.
Shockwave therapy produces an inflammatory response, which means the body speeds up metabolic activity to the affected area, which can accelerate the healing process.
The treatment is usually carried out once or twice a week, with most people having three to six sessions which include 2,000 shocks to the affected area each session.
Clinical outpatient manager, Laura Hale, said: 'We are very pleased to now be offering shockwave therapy at the Nuffield Health Cheltenham Hospital.
'For patients, this means we can offer a non-invasive, drug-free treatment that can be used alongside rehab to improve the outcome of physiotherapy.
'Many patients experience improved mobility, reduced pain and faster recovery without the need for surgery or long-term medication.'
Shockwave therapy is most commonly used for treating plantar fasciitis and tendon issues including Achilles, patella (knee cap), shoulder pain, tennis or golfers elbow and hip pain.
The treatment is available for self-funding patients and most private medical insurance patients.
Patients can also self-refer for this treatment.
