Tewkesbury Borough Council has officially given Gloucestershire's new David Lloyd club the green light this July 2025, as plans are passed for the new site in Bishop's Cleeve.
Occupying an area previously marked for industrial units, opposite Cheltenham North Rugby Club on Stoke Road, the new luxury health club will have heated indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a state-of-the-art gym, top-class racquet facilities, a luxury spa and spa garden, multiple exercise studios and a dedicated kids' activities programme with an indoor and outdoor play area.
The new club will be the second site to open in Gloucestershire, with the first located in Gloucester at Gloucester Business Park.
To support David Lloyd Leisure's 2030 carbon net zero commitment, the facilities will have an expansive run of solar PV panels across its roofs and electric vehicle charging points in the car park.
Tewkesbury Borough councillor, Richard Stanley, commenting on his community Facebook page, said: 'David Lloyd will be investing in a vibrant community and I encourage them to work with and support their new local community to ensure that they fulfil the huge potential our area has.
'Bishop's Cleeve is one of our largest settlements and yet retains a strong sense of village identity and very strong sense of community.
'Our businesses are changing to reflect the community's wish to see great services and leisure facilities in the village and Bishop's Cleeve has become a great place to eat, drink and for people to come together.'
The new club is expected to create around 100 job openings, which the council predict will support the under-25s age group in particular, as it notes the Bishop's Cleeve area as having 'one of the youngest population settlements in the county'.
While the original consultation plans hoped for a late 2026 opening, no official timeline has been given by David Lloyd as yet.
