Absurdity reigns at this year's Cheltenham International Film Festival, with Monty Python star, Terry Gilliam, set to make a special appearance.

Award-winning director and Monty Python icon Terry Gilliam is making an appearance at the sixth edition of Cheltenham International Film Festival to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The cinema stalwart will present a newly restored version of the cult comedy, which stars fellow Monty Python members John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin and the late Graham Chapman.

Viewers will also be treated to 'outrageous' behind-the-scenes stories and 'rare insights' from its co-director in conversation at The Bacon Theatre. The screening celebrates the 50th anniversary of 'the most gloriously silly film ever made', which premiered in 1975 and is hailed on review site Rotten Tomatoes as 'a cult classic as gut-bustingly hilarious as it is blithely ridiculous' and a film that 'has lost none of its exceedingly silly charm.'

The screening is one of many events happening across Gloucestershire at this year's film festival. Others include a showing of the original Phantom of the Opera accompanied by silent film musician Neil Brand, as well as the Sundance breakout hit, Sorry, Baby.

The festival commences on Monday 15 September 2025 with Hitchcock's North By Northwest at Sherborne Cinema in Gloucester and wraps up Sunday 5 October with a screening, Q&A and behind-the-scenes documentary of Signs of Life, which welcomes Moon Knight star and writer and director of the film, Joseph Milson, to the University of Gloucestershire's Park Campus in Cheltenham.

And it's not just cinemas and theatres playing host, but also bars, pubs and even restaurants all over the county, with The Bottle of Sauce hosting Simon Pegg and Nick Frost classics like Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead.
