The Forest of Dean has been named one of England's top hidden gems in a new list compiled by experts at national outdoor retailer, Millets.
Renowned for its natural beauty, home to numerous sprawling woodlands — with a new one incoming — and one of the best holiday parks for family breaks in the UK, it's a hotspot for tourism during the school holidays and throughout the year.
And as another bank holiday and half term break is almost upon us, the Gloucestershire district is getting recognition nationally, thanks to this new list.
Millets compiled the list by scouring reviews on TripAdvisor — with the Forest achieving a score of 4.8 out of five.
Overtaking locations in Devon, Oxfordshire and Cornwall, the Forest of Dean came third in the list, just behind Embleton Bay in Northumberland and Porth Joke in Cornwall.
Commenting on the results, blog author and outdoor enthusiast at Millets, Sam Chadwick, said: 'In recent years, more people have discovered the benefits of spending time outdoors, with hotspots like Mam Tor and Scafell Pike growing in popularity.
'We have compiled a list of England’s best hidden gems, for those who want to avoid the crowds whilst enjoying the outdoors.'
Other inclusions ranked in the list are Barricane Beach in Devon, Kingley Vale in West Sussex, Norsey Wood in Essex, Heartwood Forest and Runswick Bay in Yorkshire.
Sam continued: 'The Forest of Dean provides a tranquil and scenic retreat from the crowds, with dense woodlands, lakes and charming villages.
'It’s also an ideal destination for adventure enthusiasts, offering a variety of outdoor activities, including scenic walks, cycling trails and horse riding.'
