As part of the exciting build up to 11 days of sport at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the official Queen’s Baton Relay has been making its ways around the world – covering an estimated 90,000 miles and being passed on by Batonbearers in communities across the Commonwealth including Singapore, Pakistan, Africa and New Zealand.
Gloucestershire will officially welcome the Queen’s Baton, as part of its 16th official relay, on Tuesday 5 July 2022, when the Baton will be passing through Gloucester, ending its south west leg in Cheltenham.
While timings are still set to be confirmed, the route through Gloucester sees the Baton arrive at Gloucester Docks by boat, before making its way up Southgate Street to the Cross, then Westgate Street and through Gloucester Cathedral’s grounds before finally being carried to Kings Square for a celebratory event.
While in Cheltenham, the Queen’s Baton Relay will visit The Prince of Wales Stadium, before journeying through Pittville Park, ending with a celebration on the steps of Pittville Pump Room.
With festivities beginning from 5pm, the park makes for a brilliant space for the family to enjoy an afternoon picnic and live entertainment, as well as securing a prime spot to see the Baton.
The relay will span the UK for 29 days, beginning on Monday 4 July 2022, finishing at the Opening Ceremony in Birmingham on Thursday 28 July 2022, where the final Batonbearer will return the Baton to The Queen.
Laurie Bell, chief executive of The Cheltenham Trust, said: ‘We are delighted to welcome the Baton at the Prince of Wales Stadium and to host the official reception at Pittville Pump Room at the end of its south west region tour.
‘This is a unique opportunity for the local community to enjoy the spectacle of the Baton and to support the relay carriers.’
The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games take place from Thursday 28 July until Monday 8 August 2022.
