At David Lloyd Gloucester, members can take advantage of a range of benefits, including indoor and outdoor tennis and badminton courts; indoor and outdoor swimming pools; a children’s pool, and a spacious gym.
With a focus on health, wellbeing and family, SoGlos headed to Virgin Active Health & Racquets Club for a spot of yoga, a few hours of pure pampering and nose around the state-of-the-art gym.
Since opening its doors less than 18 months ago, Virgin Active in Brockworth has garnered a reputation for being one of the finest, family-friendly health clubs around, and having tried – and failed – to shed those extra pounds ahead of summer, it was high time that SoGlos headed to Gloucestershire Health and Racquets club to see if this could be the place to help.
We almost forgot our aim for the day as we passed through the adults-only lounge and vast, gleaming bar and food area, kitted out with big, comfy chairs and flat screen televisions, reminiscent of a classy wine bar.
And although tempted to begin with a Costa coffee and full English, we resisted, and made our way to the changing rooms to prepare for our Sunday morning yoga class.
The walls throughout the club are decked with pictures of smiling staff, a round-the-clock schedule of 120 classes ranging from circuits, cardio tennis and V-Cycle to Zumba, Pilates and boxing, as well as badminton and tennis programmes catering for beginners to experts, which take place on both indoor and outdoor courts and are included in the racquets membership.
The changing rooms were impressive to say the least, with a dedicated family area, hairdryers that actually work, self-contained tanning pods, private cubicles and mirrors galore, all adding to the luxurious feel of the place.
Our yoga class took place in the smaller of the club’s two fitness studios, which was peaceful, low lit and featured a kit cubby hole bursting with enough mats, blocks, straps and gym balls to satisfy a small army of yogis. And we were glad to see that we weren’t the only newbies in the packed-out room, with men and women of all ages and abilities breathing, stretching, balancing – and wobbling – through the downward-facing dog right up to the seemingly impossible monkey pose – or the splits to us laymans.
Feeling relaxed and refreshed, we admit we couldn’t quite face working up a sweat in the gym afterwards, but our attentive guide Will showed us around all the same.
We were surprised at how open, airy and inviting the gym floor was, with the state-of-the-art cardio and fixed strength equipment spread out across different areas, interspersed with the TRX Suspension, kettlebells, ViPR and floor zones, giving gym bunnies the chance to vary their workouts without having to traipse to the other side of the room.
It was evident that Virgin Active is particularly popular with families, and not least because of its in-house crèche offering a range of activities to keep the kids busy – with four hours per week included in the membership price, no less.
And there was no feeling intimidated by bulging body-builders’ muscles here either, with the club’s clear focus on health and wellbeing, and an in-house spa offering everything from facials to waxing, in addition to a relaxing spa area too.
We ended our visit with a dip in the heated outdoor pool – another family favourite – followed by a tranquil spell in the pristine spa area, complete with an enormous, bubbly Jacuzzi, sauna and steam rooms.
While Virgin Active Gloucestershire Health and Racquet Club is certainly not the cheapest around, with monthly memberships ranging from £60 to £79, paying that little bit extra does come with a multitude of luxurious benefits.
Leaving feeling truly relaxed, revitalised and pampered, we were certain that this club was ‘the one’ for us, perhaps because we’d prefer a luxurious chill out over a strenuous work out… so, those extra pounds might just have to wait to be shedded.
