With a reputation for posh parties and one of the go-to holiday destinations in the UK, the Cotswolds is the ultimate backdrop for a glamorous big bash.
But how do you plan the perfect Cotswolds party? SoGlos chats to Karl Newman, consultant general manager at The Dial House in Bourton-on-the-Water, to find out more about what's needed to make your special occasion spectacular.
How did you get into hospitality and hosting?
I was trained as a lawyer and a pilot in Lima in Peru, which is where I'm originally from. Then, I travelled the world in luxurious cruise ships, where I was trained and learned everything about hospitality.
Since then, I have worked in events for more than 20 years in the UK and I have opened a variety of venues in Cheltenham.
These days, I run my own events company and hospitality consultancy Maita'i Events Cotswolds alongside running the beautiful The Dial House Hotel in Bourton-on-the-Water as a consultant general manager.
It has been challenging at times, but I am really happy with the way it has
shaped up. I'm proud of its reputation as a quirky venue with eclectic interior design, good food,
drinks, service and an amazing vibe.
What does the perfect party in the Cotswolds look like?
For me, it would have to be a medieval house, with a beautiful backdrop of rolling hills, water running around the gardens and a mobile bar and cocktail lounge, placed in the heart of the outdoor space, to deliver an event that embraces all of this beauty.
What are the Cotswolds party essentials?
One of my top priorities is lighting, which I consider absolutely essential. Once you've got that right, you need to give plenty of thought to the music and ambience.
Good furniture, a nice bar and beautiful crockery and glassware all complete the picture for the backdrop of a perfect party.
What should planners focus on and not get too concerned about?
The most important thing is making the client comfortable and taking any stress away from them, so they can feel totally at ease.
And when it comes to pulling off a successful event, it's best not to get too concerned about planning too tightly. That way, if things are not going according to the original plan, you can adapt and go with the flow — which often brings about the best results.
Do you have any examples of great Cotswolds parties you've been to and memories of why they were so good?

I have been involved in many memorable events across the Cotswolds and the reason they were so good was because of all of the effort, care and attention to detail that went into them.
When it all comes together, to see happy people having a great time is the best reward.
Is The Dial House a good place to plan a party and why?
We specialise in day time parties and pre-wedding parties.
We've thrown so many successful parties that we believe we are the best venue for turning milestone moments into unforgettable celebrations.
What makes the Cotswolds such a special place to host a party?
That's easy, it's the natural beauty. It really is so special and attracts people from all around the globe to soak it up. And a party is the perfect place to celebrate one of the most wonderful places in the world.
If you had to give your top five tips for someone planning the perfect party, what would they be?
The first thing is drafting the plan so you can map it all out as an overview.
Next up is the design which will influence the ambience of the event.
The third thing to think about is the caterer and ensuring they can deliver exactly what you want.
Fourth is lighting, some people don't even give that enough thought, but it really is so important for the mood and vibe.
And my fifth tip is to trust your instincts and to go with the flow.
Why do you love party planning?
Party planning is so unique, every occasion is different and each one gives you the chance to build amazing venues and memories at each event.
What could be more special than creating magical experiences that will be cherished for a lifetime?
