Cheltenham shopping centre Regent Arcade has confirmed it will remove its footbridge linking with Cavendish House, unlocking potential redevelopment for both sites.
The shopping centre initially applied to Cheltenham Borough Council for permission to remove the bridge back in July and has since been approved, paving the way for the 'exciting' addition of a new single-level restaurant, featuring a balcony offering 'panoramic views' of Regent Street.
The elevated bridge has crossed the street for 40 years, serving as a link between Regent Arcade and Cavendish House; and has also housed The Bridge Café for 16 years.
Regent Arcade says its removal will bring back sightlines that have been obscured for decades, 'enhancing the streetscape and celebrating Cheltenham’s historic character'.
It would also signal the first phase of the long-term decoupling of Regent Arcade and Cavendish House – both owned by Canada Life Asset Management – which will help 'unlock potential future redevelopment plans' for Cavendish House, the company says.
Scott Lahive, centre manager at Regent Arcade, said: 'The new restaurant unit will undoubtedly be iconic, offering the best views on Regent Street and, uniquely for this location, trading on a single level with access from both the shopping centre and directly from Regent Street.
'We hope our plans will provide a positive boost, not just for Regent Arcade, but also for our neighbours along Regent Street.'
While the removal of the bridge between Cavendish House and the Regent Arcade has been approved, a specific removal date is yet to be announced.
