First opening its doors in 1929, Bath Road Big Fish has been a much-loved part of Cheltenham's food scene for nearly a century.
And to celebrate its heritage, for one special day, the shop is set to roll back the years and give locals the chance to enjoy fish and chip favourites for the price their grandparents may have once paid.
During the Second World War, when the Bath Road Traders organised their own night-watch wardens to keep an eye out for incendiary bombs, Bath Road Big Fish even became a makeshift base for those on duty – valued for being the warmest spot on cold winter nights.
Over the decades, the shop has passed through several hands, with each leaving their mark, including Mr and Mrs Albert Hill, who eventually went on to open Norwood Fish Bar; Arthur and Lydia Camsey, whose son played the cornet in Cheltenham's Salvation Army band; and Albert Richards, who took over in 1948 and gave the shop the name it still boasts today.
Generations of families have queued along the lively Bath Road for their Friday night fish suppers over the years, with the chippy continuing to serve through the turbulence of the war years, through economic changes and through shifting food trends.

For the first 100 customers on the day, portions will be available at a symbolic 1925 price point – thought to be just a few pennies way back when – in a nod to the rich history and tradition of the great British chippy.
Some delicious options on the special menu include mini cod and chips; sausage (plain or battered) and chips; two chicken strips and chips; two halloumi and chips; and fish cake and chips – all for just 10p per portion!
The offer will be limited to one portion per person to keep things fair and ensure as many customers can get the chance to take part and enjoy the deal.
Those who don't manage to be one of the first 100 in the queue needn't worry either, as everyone after will get a huge 50 per cent off their orders for the rest of the day, too.
With a warm and welcoming atmosphere and strong community spirit, Bath Road Big Fish has become more than just another takeaway, but more a local staple known for its golden batter, fresh fish and friendly service.
And this nostalgic event aims to remind Cheltenham why the humble fish supper still holds such a special place in the hearts of so many.
Bath Road Big Fish's 100-year celebration day takes place on Wednesday 22 October 2025 from 12pm until 9.30pm – don't miss out on this chippy celebration!
