Supermarket giant Aldi launches a public consultation this September, for its proposed plans to bring a food store and drive-through to Cotswolds hotspot, Bourton-on-the-Water.
The plans include building a store on the existing land in the Bourton Industrial Park extension, which has been allocated for employment in the Cotswold Local Plan. It also plans to build a new signalised junction at the Fosse Way and Meadow Way junction.
Alongside the grocery store, Aldi wants to include a Costa Coffee Drive-Thru and is promising an investment of over £7 million into the area and the creation of 60 new jobs for local people.
The community consultation states that 'the local retail offering is currently limited to small convenience stores and more expensive options, with a lack of discount retailers in the immediate area' and that its proposed plans would 'promote a more sustainable travel pattern, with residents no longer needing to travel further afield for affordable healthy food and fresh produce'.
It also points out that the Cotswold village currently lacks a Costa Coffee branch, with its nearest locations being in Cheltenham or Chipping Norton.
A statement on the Aldi website read: 'A new Aldi food store and Costa Coffee Drive-Thru, well-located for the Bourton-on-the-Water community, would improve the local supermarket and cafe offering, meaning residents will not have to travel to other settlements for a more diversified retail offer.
'Aldi is already a key investor and employer in the region, with existing stores in Moreton-in-Marsh, Chipping Norton and Cirencester. The proposals would create up to 40 full- and part-time jobs for local people paid at Aldi's industry-leading rate and around 20 jobs at Costa Coffee.'
The consultation is open until Tuesday 7 October 2025, after which the supermarket will submit its planning application to Cotswold District Council.
