Gloucestershire is famed for its thriving sports community, from horse racing, cricket and rugby to cycling and football — but did you know, you can see national and international racket tournaments in Cheltenham, too?
As a major venue with excellent facilities, the governing bodies — including LTA, England Squash and the PSA (Professional Squash Association) — entrust East Glos Club to run some major tournaments, bringing world-class talent to the county.
A selection of major tennis tournaments are hosted at the venue, spanning junior to adult — including the LTA County Cup.
Possibly the UK's oldest tennis event, dating back to 1895, East Glos has hosted it as a preferred LTA venue for many years.
Other prestigious competitions include the Cheltenham Open — which former pro players Tim Henham and Jo Durie were juniors in, back in the day.
There's also the Grade 1 Under 14 National Grass Court Championships, which East Glos has been hosting since 2022, featuring top youngsters from across the country; the school's tennis festival, in partnership with Move More; and the Gloucestershire County Championships, too.
Additionally, there's plenty of squash and racketball action, with a series of county tournaments and the £1k PSA Satellite event, featuring resident pros Will Salter, Tayne Turnock, Carys and Ellie Jones, alongside players from as far afield as South Korea, Japan and Brazil.
The first ever Central England Racketball Open; Proam doubles; and England Squash Silver Junior Sanctioned event have all appeared on the Cheltenham courts too.
And all the events are free to watch, with East Glos welcoming the community to do so.
But it’s not just the playing facilities that are important — it's the hospitality and the ability to cater for large numbers of competitors and spectators.
After the game head to the on-site bar, which is open all day, seven days a week; with lunches and snacks available at the club cafe, too.
