Inspired by high-fashion window displays, theatrical set design and the fantastical imagery of the recent Wicked film; an imaginative trade stand designed in Nailsworth has won a four gold star award at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2025.
Dreamt up by Rachael Austin, co-founder of Austin Design Works, for the Society of Garden and Landscape Designers (SGLD), the lavish design is catching visitors' attention and has won high praise from RHS judges.
Featuring a three-layered experience, the SGLD stand moves from a whimsical nursery rhyme-inspired dreamscape, through the technical process of garden creation, into a real-world garden scene, framed by a rose-laden wooden arch and glowing festoon lights.
The construction of the stand was brought to life by the team at Austin Design Works who worked alongside Stroud illustrator Jenny Bowers.
Together, they crafted a hand-drawn, white-painted stage set, intricate construction drawings and an immersive final scene.
Accessibility and inclusivity were central to the design, with ramps for easier access, enhanced audio descriptions and a celebration of the diversity of clients, designers and communities that SGLD represents.
A four gold star award indicates a high level of excellence in design, execution and overall presentation.
RHS judges highlighted the stand's creativity, storytelling and innovative design, stating it 'perfectly encapsulates the journey from garden dream to garden reality'.
Rachael said: 'Winning this award at RHS Chelsea is beyond anything I could have hoped for.
'It’s a celebration of the power of gardens to inspire, connect and include everyone.
'I'm so proud of the incredible team effort behind this project for combining craftsmanship, technical expertise and artistic flair.
'As a certified B Corporation, Austin Design Works is proud to champion sustainability, creativity, and social responsibility at every stage of our work.
'To see these values recognised on one of the world’s most prestigious stages is a tremendous honor.'
RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London runs until Saturday 24 May 2025.
