East Glos Club in Cheltenham has been recognised as one of the UK’s top three tennis clubs at the 2022 LTA Tennis Awards.

It’s an incredible achievement for the popular Gloucestershire club, which offers fun and sociable racket sports and professional coaching for players of all levels – with the awards celebrating the best venues and individuals that are involved in tennis at a grassroots, county and regional level.

During a virtual awards ceremony on Thursday 19 May 2022, East Glos reached the final three in the competitive Club of the Year category, in a field of seven finalists from England, Scotland and Wales.

Leon Smith OBE, LTA head of men’s tennis and host of the virtual awards ceremony, commented that East Glos Club had an ‘exceptional 2021, with major facility developments, including three new padel courts, the refurbishment of facilities and a huge competition programme.’

He continued: ‘Their membership increased by over 25 per cent, with a significant rise in the 18-to-30 age group. Their weekly coaching programmes attract over 600 people and their pay and play offer has attracted many new players from the community.’

East Glos Club narrowly missed out on winning the category, with the award going to Grantham Tennis Club in Lincolnshire, but has expressed its pride in reaching the final three from the hundreds of LTA-affiliated clubs across the country.

The Cheltenham club also reached the final seven in the Competition of the Year category, recognised for the Grade 2 Junior under 12 to under 18 grass court tournament it held in the summer of 2021.

East Glos Club is open to members of all ages and abilities, offering racketball, squash and the fast-growing sport, padel, as well as tennis.
