One of the oldest surviving medieval Dominican priories in Britain, Gloucester's Blackfriars Priory is a now a gold award-winning wedding venue, too – 'putting the city on the map' with its recent win at the South West Tourism Awards 2023.
Blackfriars Priory plays host to hundreds of nuptials seeing happy couples tie the knot each year – and it's beaten wedding venues across the whole of the south west to be named Wedding Venue of the Year for 2023.
Describing the team as ‘knowledgeable and passionate about what they do’, the South West Tourism Awards recognises the historic venue for its 'very special atmosphere' – as well as highlighting the attention and focus it pays to each individual couple, stating that ‘it really has the wow factor that all engaged couples are looking for to help them celebrate their big day.'
The judging process saw Blackfriars assessed on everything from ease of booking and staff friendliness to sustainability and social media.
The 13th century monument has won a string of accolades since being taken on by the council back in 2012, including winning the Best Venue category in the 2022 South West Tourism Awards; the Wedding Planner category at the International Wedding Awards; the platinum award in the Best of Bridebook Awards; and even trophies in the Hitched Wedding Awards and Matrimony Awards.
Councillor Andy Lewis, cabinet member for culture and leisure at Gloucester City Council, said: 'It’s such an achievement to win this award, there's so many outstanding wedding venues in the whole of the South West and to win is simply extraordinary!
