What can audiences expect from the theatre adaptation of Northanger Abbey?
Described as a classic coming-of-age romance story and Jane Austen's 'most playful novel' by the Everyman Theatre, Northanger Abbey is believed to be Jane Austen's earliest work.
It follows Gothic horror novel-obsessed Catherine Morland, a teenage girl with a vibrant imagination.
During a visit to Bath, she meets young clergyman Henry Tilney, and is invited to his family home in Gloucestershire. Upon learning the home is an abbey – the eponymous Northanger Abbey, no less – Catherine gets carried away with her wild imagination and begins to suspect that the Tilney family hide strange secrets.
This new stage adaptation, which made its stage debut in Worcester this summer, is directed by Paul Milton and is produced by Worcester Repertory Company – the same company behind last year's successful Sense and Sensibility.
Local audiences can expect a joyful romance with a Gothic flair that is described by organisers as 'plenty of fun' and a little bit 'spooky'!

Northanger Abbey will be on stage at the Everyman Theatre from Wednesday 29 July to Saturday 1 August 2026, with show times starting at either 2pm or 7.30pm.
