Is there a shift for people being concerned about their health?

People who hit a certain age and their children have left home, they’re now investing time in themselves. We got lots of couples and friends who come together and train together.

Why is it important to consider your health and fitness when you’re older?

People are living longer and they’re not prepared to just sit around and watch television. Grandparents are far more active than they used to be. Also, older people want more energetic and active social lives.

What is the biggest diet myth?

People can buy into diets and they will work occasionally. But if diets alone worked, there wouldn’t be a need for gyms. It can’t just be diet alone, to lose weight and get fit is like having the keys to the safe.

A safe has several combinations and you need to get them all lined up for it to work. But sometimes, it’s not just about diet and exercise, it’s about getting sleep, being happy and having good positive thoughts.

What are the links with a positive mental health and exercise?

People might have all the intentions of losing weight but might not be in the right mindset. That’s where we can help, we can support you and encourage you. I think this can actually be one of the benefits of social media. People can join online groups for support.

What are the benefits of having a personal training session at Personal Best?

I use the analogy of cook books. People will have lots of cookbooks but still not know what to cook for dinner. If you can go to the gym and not have to think about what you’ve got to do, then it’s much easier. If a trainer is there thinking it through for you and supporting you, you’re more likely to get the results.

People don’t like to let down anyone so they come along to their sessions. We’ve got people that have been coming to us for 18 years!

How can you can help someone that has an injury?

That’s what we’re all about. We have a chiropractic clinic in the studio so that we can help. Most people when they start training come across injuries which can be a barrier for them moving forward.

We offer people a consultation with our clinic team who offer them a screening and give them some really useful ideas of what they can do. They also advise on what issues you can encounter in your future training.

We worked with a lady who fell off her horse and spent three months in hospital and now she cycles down the gym, has an hour session with me and swims three times a week.

We really help people to change their lifestyle and their overall health too.
