Capped twice by England as a player, Martin Haag has served as forwards coach of Bath Rugby, head coach of England Under 20s and has also held roles in the women's game, with the USA and Scotland.

Hartpury University and College has appointed experienced top-level coach and former England rugby player Martin Haag to oversee 'the continued growth and success' of its elite rugby programmes.

Martin joins Hartpury as head of rugby performance, a strategic role in which he will be responsible for the coaching, performance and development of players within all aspects of the university and college's rugby structure.

A former Bath Rugby forward who was capped twice by England in the 90s, Martin brings 'extensive experience' from a 'distinguished' coaching career, including roles with Bath, Nottingham and England U20s, which he led to the World Rugby Under 20 Championship in 2016.

Hartpury says his expertise in 'developing talent and building high-performing teams' will directly benefit the students and staff across its entire rugby pathway, including its successful senior and university sides and its ACE programme, which balances academic pursuits with rugby development.

Martin said: 'I’m honoured to join Hartpury and look forward to continuing the incredible legacy built by those who came before me.

'Hartpury University and College has a long-standing reputation for excellence in rugby. I look forward to working with talented players and staff across the programmes to create an environment where everyone can perform at their best and reach their full potential.'

Mick Axtell, COO at Hartpury commented: 'We are thrilled to welcome Martin to Hartpury.

'His experience at the top levels of the sport, along with his commitment to player and coach development, makes him the ideal person to lead our performance rugby programme into its next chapter.'
