National Highways is closing the M5 motorway between junctions 11 and 12 near Gloucester this October 2026 to demolish Uphill Court and Grove Court footbridges.
Both bridges have been closed since March 2026, but with their condition deteriorating, they need to be removed 'before they become a hazard to the M5'.
Demolition works will involve closing the M5 northbound junction 11a exit slip road for around two weeks from 8pm on Sunday 11 October 2026, with a diversion via junction 11.
Then from 11pm on Friday 16 until Monday 19 October 2026, the M5 will be closed in both directions between junctions 11 and 12, including junction 11a.
National Highways is expecting local diversion routes to be busy, so is urging motorists only to travel if necessary and to drive considerately through local communities, as some roads on diversion routes are not built for heavy traffic.
It is also highlighting additional nearby roadworks, including lane closures on the A40 at Over Bridge, and ongoing works and overnight closures on the A417 between Gloucester and Cirencester, which may compound delays and increase journey times further.
Anyone travelling between the Midlands and South Wales is encouraged to use the M50 instead.
Uphill Court and Grove Court bridges are both due to be replaced with new, upgraded structures featuring safe access for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users within the next five years, 'subject to funding and other network priorities'.
