Launching on Netflix on Tuesday 17 November 2020 (at 8am GMT, if you’re particularly keen), Netflix describes new series We Are the Champions as exploring ‘the quirkiest, most charming, and oddly inspirational competitions you never knew existed,’ with Gloucester Cheese Rolling the sole subject of its first episode.

‘Each episode follows a unique competition, providing a window into a world of determined, passionate, and incredibly skilled competitors who put it all on the line to become heroes in their own extraordinary worlds,’ the synopsis continues – with star of The Office US, Rainn Wilson, both executive producer and narrator.

In official television listings on Netflix, the first episode of We Are the Champions is entitled ‘Cheese Rolling’, with the description: ‘Each May, in a quiet English village, thousands of people gather to watch runners chase a wheel of cheese down a hill. A very steep hill.

‘We Are the Champions follows competitors as they sprint, tumble and crash down the hill at top speed – risking fractured limbs and broken collar bones – to cross the finish line first and be crowned the Cheese Rolling Champion.’

As well as Cheese Rolling, other episodes filmed in the UK and US also include Chili Eating, Fantasy Hair Styling, Yo-Yo, Dog Dancing and Frog Jumping.

Don’t miss the chance to spot Gloucestershire competitors and spectators alike on the steep banks of Cooper’s Hill, when the new series launches on Netflix during lockdown, this November 2020.
