A Cheltenham tavern has been ranked the second cosiest in the country — and came out top for its Sunday lunches.

When you're looking for somewhere to cuddle up in front of a roaring open fire after a comforting Sunday lunch, nothing beats a Great British pub — and a Cheltenham inn has been voted one of the cosiest in the UK.

The Swan on Cheltenham High Street takes second place on a list of the top 10 cosiest pubs in the country, coming in just behind The Royal Standard of England in Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire.

With a whopping 39,000 pubs in England alone to whittle down, the study by South Western Railway ranked establishments using a variety of categories from ambience to comfort, to give an overall cosiness score out of 100.

The availability of a Sunday dinner and Google reviews were also taken into account.

The Swan achieved an overall cosiness score of 81 out of 100 and ranked the highest for its Sunday lunches — beating pubs in Edinburgh, Salisbury, Cumbria and Devon.

Its menu features classics like traditional roast beef and chicken, as well as delicious a vegan option of mushroom and spinach filled pastry, all served with locally sourced organic vegetables, roast potatoes and gravy — and is served from 12pm to 5pm on Sunday.
