Cotswolds hotel Calcot & Spa has a new executive chef and he's a familiar face — from almost 20 year ago.

Born and raised in Stroud, John Jewell followed his passion and started cooking at Calcot’s Conservatory restaurant in 2005.

His journey through the culinary world took him to London where he worked at Gordon Ramsay’s then restaurant Maze and Jason Atherton’s Mayfair restaurant.

John returned to the Cotswolds to work for The Lucky Onion Group, from there returning to The Calcot Collection at the then Barnsley Village Pub as head chef, before taking on the challenge as head chef at The Gumstool Innworking alongside Richard Davies.

John rejoined Barnsley House and The Village Pub as executive chef working with Matthew Thomas to launch The Boot which was a great success.

Full circle, he returned to Calcot & Spa this year.

Stroud born, John studied law at university before following his passion for cooking. With his mother a cook, he was keen to follow in her footsteps.

In John’s free time he coaches Stroud under 11’s rugby football team and he's an all-round rugby enthusiast.

Tables for Calcot & Spa can be booked online.
