It’s a common misconception that Cheltenham town centre is heaving during the Cheltenham Festival.

In reality, the town’s main shopping areas are relatively quiet, with local people avoiding the area and the majority of visitors spending their day at the racecourse itself.

To try and encourage more footfall on the high street, Cheltenham Borough Council is offering free parking in all of its carparks from 1pm between Monday 11 and Friday 15 March 2019, inclusive.

Visitors will be able to park for free at Bath Parade, Chelt Walk, High Street, West End, Rodney Road, Sherborne Place, St James Street, Town Centre East (formerly Grosvenor Terrace), St George’s Road, Royal Well, Regent Arcade, Coronation Square, Commercial Street and Bath Terrace.

It’s the third year that the scheme has been run in Cheltenham, with Kevan Blackadder, director of Cheltenham Business Improvement District (BID), saying: ‘We had good feedback from our businesses last year that free parking in the afternoons had made a real difference. Too many locals stay away from the town centre during Race Week, but it’s a great time to come into town.

‘It’s good to see that the council is again supporting this initiative, which I’m sure will help more businesses make the very best of the opportunities that Race Week brings.’

It’s worth noting that the free afternoon parking during race week will only apply to the council run car parks listed above, and not any NCP car parks or on-street parking.
