Five Valley’s Shopping Centre sees first big changes

Work is about to get started to transform Stroud’s main shopping centre, formerly known as Merrywalks, into a more modern space, and will be known as the Five Valleys Shopping Centre.

Work will begin to transform Stroud’s Five Valleys Shopping Centre as part of a four-million-pound renovation project on Monday 24 June 2019.

The centre, which was formerly known as Merrywalks, will see the glazed roof replaced and the car park improved by wrapping its exterior, to make it a far more attractive feature.

It’s hoped this phase of the work will be completed by May 2020, but the centre will remain open to customers throughout.

The main mall will also be completely redesigned as part of the works during a later phase. The transformation has been funded by GFirst LEP, which has provided a one-million-pound loan and a three-million-pound grant.

Gavin Ward is the project director at Dransfield Properties which is heading up the redevelopment, and said: ‘We are delighted to be starting work on this third phase of the Five Valleys project.

‘Stroud is a beautiful market town and it’s great that the community can really start to see the transformation taking place now, and the positive impact these improvements will have on the town centre.’
