Coronavirus vaccination mega-centre has opened near Gloucestershire

Ashton Gate stadium in Bristol will accommodate one of the UK’s seven vaccination mega-centres in the fight against Coronavirus – the closest site to Gloucestershire.

Bristol’s Ashton Gate stadium has become a Coronavirus vaccination mega-centre – the closest one to Gloucestershire – as of Monday 11 January 2021, aiding the fight against the disease during the third national lockdown.

Downing Street revealed the news on Wednesday 6 January 2021 that the site, which is home to Bristol City Football Club and normally enjoys crowds of up to 27,000, will see thousands of Covid-19 vaccinations delivered each week.

It is the closest of seven UK sports stadia and exhibition centres being transformed into vaccination hubs to Gloucestershire, with others including Millennium Point in Birmingham, Epsom Racecourse in Surrey and the NHS Nightingale centre at London’s ExCel complex.

It is hoped that the regional centres will help to vaccinate everyone in the top four priority groups – which includes all over 70s; elderly care home residents; frontline NHS and care staff; and those who are clinically vulnerable – by Monday 15 February 2021.
