Cheltenham independent school secures £3m investment

Cheltenham’s St Edward’s School has been acquired by a leading UK independent schools group, which has pledged to invest £3 million to improve its facilities.

St Edward’s School in Cheltenham is set to receive a £3 million investment after being acquired by leading UK independent schools group, Alpha Schools.

As part of the deal, Alpha has pledged to invest £3 million into the school, to improve the facilities at St Edward’s and allow it to offer new bursaries and scholarships.

It also hopes Alpha Group’s expertise in the 11+ and the International Baccalaureate will further improve the results and reputation of the Cheltenham school.

With many independent schools facing difficulties as a direct impact of the pandemic, St Edward’s Trustees proactively reached out to find a partner which could strengthen the school and give pupils the opportunity to thrive and prosper.

Dr Susan Honeywill, chair of trustees at St Edward’s School said: ‘Like us, Alpha Schools is committed to providing a happy environment in which pupils can meet and exceed academic expectations, developing their own unique individual gifts and talents. The Alpha team has as an impressive track record of helping similar schools to St Edward’s fulfil their potential.

‘I am confident St Edward’s will go from strength to strength under the stewardship of our hugely dedicated staff body and the Alpha Team’.

St Edward’s principal, Matthew Burke, added: ‘St Edward’s has happy pupils, committed teachers, a beautiful site and a community of which we are proud.

‘We look forward to forging links with other schools within the Alpha Group and building on recent 11+, GCSE and A Level exam successes. I welcome all who want to experience what we have to offer at St Edward’s in the future.’
