See a diverse collection of work by artists inspired and mentored by renowned British photographer, Vanley Burke, at the Museum of Gloucester this autumn.

The Museum of Gloucester’s latest exhibition is a diverse collection of work from local artists, mentored and supported by renowned photographer, Vanley Burke.

History, Her Story, Their Story, Our Story depicts creative responses to the question, ‘when was the first time you saw someone of a different ethnicity to you?’

Four Gloucester-based artists, Rider Shafique; Thembe Mvula; JDPL; and Phil Campbell, all hosted workshops with the community, to ask them about their own experiences and gather their stories.

Under the mentorship of Vanley Burke, each artist then worked on creatively responding to each answer through art, poetry and music.

The exhibition promises to take visitors on an emotional journey, through isolation, loneliness, laughter, joy and hope, putting the stories of people who are often excluded from conversations into the spotlight – and encouraging people to learn how they can make a positive change to the world today.

Visitors will also be able to see ‘Barber Street’ by Elle Bry Thomas, a photography series focusing on 14 barber shops in the Barton Street area of Gloucester, as part of the exhibition too.

History, Her Story, Their Story, Our Story, produced by Gloucestershire Archives Fresh Air Foundations and City Voices, takes place from Saturday 16 October until Friday 31 December 2021 in the main gallery at the Museum of Gloucester.

Admission is free with visitors encouraged to make a donation of as much as they can.
