10 of Gloucestershire's finest fish and chip shops

SoGlos’s 10 favourites have – ahem – battered the competition, spanning independent award-winners and railway restaurants.


1. Simpsons Fish and Chips in Cheltenham


Winning more than 20 awards, crowned the best fish and chip shop in the UK in 2016, and serving up over a million portions of fish in chips in the last decade, it’s no wonder that Simpsons Fish & Chips in Cheltenham is a household name in Gloucestershire and beyond!

Serving a range of classic combinations, gluten-free frying nights once a month, and seasonal specials including deep-fried crème eggs and figgy pudding! Simpsons also has a restaurant in Stroud.


2. Ye Olde Restaurant and Fish Shoppe in Gloucester


Traditional by name and traditional by nature, Ye Olde Restaurant and Fish Shoppe on Gloucester’s Hare Lane is set within a quaint historic building and remains a firm local favourite for its good-quality fayre. Its chippy menu draws in the crowds, with plenty taking their paper-wrapped feasts and wooden forks to enjoy at the nearby Cathedral grounds.


3. Russell’s Fish and Chips in Broadway

Located just off Broadway’s High Street, Russell’s Fish and Chips serves the finest fish fried in Cotswold Gold rape seed oil. The menu offers classic favourites and lighter options for health-conscious locals, with blackboard specials including mussels and chips. Truly dedicated fish and chip fans also have the oppor-tuna-ty to hire Russell’s as a party venue.


4. Big Fish in Cheltenham


Located on Cheltenham’s Bath Road, Big Fish regularly sees ravenous locals queuing out the door, waiting for their turn to order. Serving comfort food at its best, the Big Fish menu spans fishy favourites, hearty bloomers, pies and burgers.

Cirencester favourite The Friar Tuck serves up fishy fare, with a small, select and highly traditional menu— cod, haddock and plaice – taking centre stage. Spam fritters and battered burgers are novel additions for locals fishing for something new.


6. Queen’s Fish and Chips in Gloucester

Serving food fit for royalty, Gloucester-based Queen’s Fish and Chips is a family business serving fish and chip shop classics in its restaurant and to take away. There are also dishes including fish roe and homemade desserts.


7. Cleeve Fish Bar in Cheltenham


Cheltenham’s Cleeve Fish Bar is located in the heart of Bishop’s Cleeve, promising a warm welcome and delicious traditional fish and chips, pies and sausages.


8. Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway in Toddington


For Gloucestershire foodies who want a side of excitement with their favourite dinner, the Cheltenham Fryer serves up a fishy feast whilst flying through the countryside on a Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway steam train—guests are sure to have a whale of a time enjoying the views, whilst chowing down on a traditional chip-shop meal.


9. Ruddys in Gloucester


Ruddys in Hucclecote has been a Gloucester institution since 1936, frying up some of the best fish and chips in the city. Described as offering good value, generous portions, the takeaway has a loyal cliental – hook, line and sinker.


10. The Fishnet in Tewkesbury


Tewkesbury’s award-winning chippy was opened in 2014 and provides quality food and service in equal measure, with an extensive menu spanning classic favourites, vegetarian dishes and even healthy salad options! The eatery has also cast its net out to Gloucestershire locals with dietary intolerances, with a special gluten free menu too.
